Module Description

We start the first day by discussing the goal of the firm and the drivers of value. This will require an understanding of cash flows and required rates of return. We will introduce concepts such as free cash flow and weighted average cost of capital. We finish the first day valuing a high-tech start-up that eventually failed and ask how a company worth several billions in December can declare bankruptcy 8 months later. On the second day, we will discuss how firms should finance themselves, followed by Mergers and Acquisitions. We will finish the day by studying one of the largest acquisitions by a company from a developing market.

Explain the role and nature of financial strategy and its relationship to shareholder value;
Identify the main elements of investment appraisal; and evaluate long-term decision opportunities through the use of appropriate techniques;
Identify and evaluate the major sources of finance available to an organization;
Explain the role of capital markets in raising finance;
Discuss the main methods of managing working capital and analyses working capital policies;
Evaluate the motive for and financial implications of, mergers and acquisitions;
Discuss the impact of taxation and inflation on financial strategy decisions.
